Evernote – Free Organizing Software for Genealogy

I have an exciting new website to share with you today – Evernote! This is a note-taking, note-gathering, snippet-clipping, handy-dandy organizing wonder that will help you keep track of your genealogy research online! Evernote is installed on your compter (PC or Mac) and you can also access your “notebooks” online or through your IPhone/IPod touch.

Inside Evernote, you create individual notebooks (say one for “Smith Family”, one for “Jones Family” and one for “Research Tips”, etc.). Inside each notebook are the “notes.” The notes are created either by the user starting a new note and typing information in it or you can use the little button on the browser to “clip” information from whatever website you are reading. How neat is that? Then, you can apply tags to each note to help you quickly access information. For example, if you are searching on Ancestry and find death records for severall members of the Smith family, then your notes can be tagged with “Smith – death record.” That way you can find which notes inside your Smith Family notebook are only related to death records at the click of a mouse.

Evernote has both a Free and Premium service. So give it a try today and sign up for a free account! Just click on the little icon below to see how it works. You’ll be prompted to open a new account and then you will have your first note, which contains a link to this post!
