Free Genealogy Software to publish your family tree online – GedHTree

Posting your tree online can be a fun way to connect with distant relatives. It’s fairly simple to do if you have the right tools. I first came across GedHTree software back in 2001 or 2002. I was searching for an easy way to put my family tree on my personal genealogy web site. After looking into several different free genealogy software packages, I settled on GedHTree due to the ease of use and how nice the resulting web pages looked. The unregistered version is free and the registered version is $19.95, which contains enhanced features. Basically, it will take your GEDCOM file from your desktop genealogy software and turn it into HTML web pages that you upload on to your own web server.

GedHTree can create several different types of trees. Of course, the standard ancestor tree can be created along with an all-inclusive tree, descendant tree, and a vertical tree. One of the coolest features is the ability to upload pictures which will be displayed next to your ancestors’ information in the tree and on family group pages.

The software will of course generate a comprehensive name index for all the people in your tree. You also get an interesting name and age statistics page. This tells you the frequency of first names in your tree. That is, how often are the same first and middles name used in your GEDCOM, broken down by male and female names. It also tells you the average age of males and females when they got married and the average life span of your ancestors.

Finally, GedHTree creates really interesting maps showing the geographic distribution of your ancestors’ birth locations along with color coding to show the dates and density. This gives you a neat snapshot showing where your ancestors lived. Maps are available for the USA, Australia, England, Canada, and Europe.

This software has been available for almost 10 years so you can be sure that they will be around should you have any questions. Give it a try today! Visit GedHTree.
