There has been quite a bit of chatter in the genealogy blogosphere about a new search engine called Mocavo. Basically, it is a powerful search engine that only concentrates on finding genealogy results. Mocavo only searches genealogy records sites, genealogy blogs, USGenWeb (and the like) plus many more to find the most relevant results for family historians. Have you ever tried to Google your ancestor and the first page is full of white page listings for people with the same name that are still alive? Well, Mocavo will help eliminate those kinds of results so you can find what you are really looking for. The folks at Mocavo offer these tips to help you use the search engine better:
- Similar to other search engines, you don’t have to capitalize any of the words
- Use quotation marks around the full name to get better results. If you put “John Johnson” in Mocavo it will also search for “Johnson John”
- Mocavo is smart and skips middle names and initials so you will also find “John A. Johnson” and “John Quincy Johnson” in the results
- To search using “or”, you use the pipe symbol (|). So you can search “John Johnson” Iowa | IA
- You can also eliminate results using the – symbol. For instance, if you keep getting “John Johnson” from Dubuque instead of the one in Davenport, you can just search “John Johnson” -Dubuque
Mocavo also offers the ability to upload your family tree so that it can automatically search for members of your tree without you lifting a finger. Now isn’t that cool? You can also allow your tree to be included in the search engine results, if you would like.
Head on over to Mocavo and check it out today!
